At 16, I moved from Russia to Finland to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Kannaksen lukio in Lahti. I had always dreamed of living abroad, so when I discovered the opportunity to complete high school in English, I seized it without hesitation. Living independently at such a young age was challenging, but it was an experience I was eager to have. After earning my diploma, I took a gap year to travel and recharge after 12 years of schooling. That year was truly something.
To support students in their job-seeking journeys, I believe initiatives that integrate employment and practical experience into their studies would be truly transformative.
For example, a friend of mine participated in the Energy Academy mentorship program in Vaasa, which connected the most proactive students with mentors from 16 renowned energy companies based in Vaasa. This program offered students a unique opportunity for personal development and professional networking over seven months. Those who excelled even secured internships, which often led to job offers.
Expanding similar programs across Finland would enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world corporate settings, gain early job placements, and immerse themselves in the professional world. Simultaneously, companies would benefit from a new generation of motivated and skilled employees. Given the challenging job market in Finland, this would create a win-win scenario—students would transition smoothly into the workforce, and corporations would acquire fresh talent ready to contribute.
