The City of Helsinki, the City of Vantaa, the City of Espoo and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment signed an innovation ecosystem agreement on 9 February 2021. Innovation ecosystem agreements strengthen the construction of attractive knowledge hubs and innovation environments. They develop innovation ecosystems, i.e. close cooperation networks, strengthen top fields of expertise and increase the impact of RDI activities of higher education institutions, research institutes and companies in a city-oriented manner.
HEVi is a platform for world-changing innovations and new growth opportunities that are created together. The project portfolio to be formed for the four key themes in 2021–2027 strengthens knowledge hubs and develops test environments, innovative procurements and new business services.
The four main themes are
- Smart and sustainable urban solutions,
- Wellbeing and health technology,
- New learning environments and Edtech solutions, and
- Ecosystem development and new ventures.

The Urban & Local project develops and implements Finland’s first modern market hall in Vantaa. This urban food development centre will bring together food industry actors from near and far. The Food Center will also be a modern meeting place where food producers, students, co-workers, distributors, consumers and other citizens meet.

Project period: 1 January 2023–30 June 2025. The ERDF-funded VALUE project is part of the Innovation and Skills in Finland programme under the specific objective of developing and enhancing research and innovation capacities and the uptake of advanced technologies.
The VALUE project will create a new local competence foresight model for Vantaa as part of the permanent structures of the growing city in close cooperation with companies, educational organisations and other stakeholders. The foresight process will help us prepare for global challenges and steer Vantaa’s growth to the growth sectors of the future.

The Food Waste Ecosystem develops the utilisation of wasted food in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, seeks ways to further reduce food waste and focuses on creating new business from things like from coffee grounds and orange peels. The project engages in real climate work for sustainable development and produces concrete solutions for reducing waste and making more efficient use of it.

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Challenge Engine challenges companies and RDI actors to solve urban development challenges. It also strengthens companies’ business opportunities, as they get to test their products in a real-world environment, and we support their internationalisation. Most of our services are free of charge. We aim to accelerate and expand the adoption of artificial intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises.
The city of Vantaa, together with Helsinki and Espoo, offers experimental environments within the project for companies to use as test platforms.
