As part of the workshop, Mariana Ahmad, an international talent who resides in Vantaa, shared her path to the participants in which she discussed her path to finding employment in Finland. After the event we had a short interview with her.

Mariana's journey to Finland is a story of determination and resilience. Originally from Singapore, she ventured into a new life in Finland as a 42-year-old production coordinator at Anima Vitae. Her path to Finland was unique—she met her husband online via OK Cupid, which eventually led her to make the life-changing decision to move to Finland. Mariana had her heart set on integrating into Finnish society and pursuing her career aspirations.

In her quest to adapt and thrive in Finland, Mariana found several services and programs invaluable. She used services offered by organizations like TE Toimisto, Luckan Intergration, and the International House Helsinki Spouse program.

These initiatives helped her navigate the challenges of integration, especially when she was unsure of her direction. Mariana also actively participated in the integration program organized by TE and took Finnish courses until she reached B1 proficiency, which was a crucial step in her journey.

Securing her first job in Finland wasn't without its hurdles. Mariana had to take different jobs in different sectors ranging from food packaging to restaurants and call centers before she landed a professional job as a production coordinator in animation industry. She had no prior experience in the animation industry, yet she managed to land a job by utilizing her connections and reaching out to companies directly. When asked if she had a job searching strategy, Mariana amplified the importance of networking by utilizing LinkedIn. She mentioned that she analyzed the types of professionals that companies were hiring and used key word searches to her advantage. Attending networking events and actively putting herself out there in the professional community were also critical components of her strategy.

When asked about her recommendations for job seekers, Mariana emphasized the significance of a strong LinkedIn profile and a well-crafted CV. These are essential tools for standing out in a competitive job market and catching the attention of potential employers.

Mariana's current job experience highlights the importance of a supportive and open work environment. Her small company encourages her to ask questions and adapt to the Finnish style of working. This approach has made her transition into Finnish working life smoother.

Mariana also has a clear message for employers in Finland who are considering hiring an international talent: "Open your minds and give us a chance." Because international talents like Mariana aspire to contribute to the Finnish workforce and bring their unique skills and perspectives to the table. She said, “we are not seeking social benefits but rather opportunities to make a meaningful impact”.

In conclusion, Mariana's journey from Singapore to Finland is a testament to her determination and the support of valuable services and programs that are made available in Finland.
